Glen Eden RSA visit to WW
Sunday we had a visit from Glen Eden the same as they did last year. They had arrived the day before and had a good night so were in good spirits when we got the pool under way.
As it turns out we ended up with 19 each, thanks so much to those of our players that backed up after playing the day before against Hastings, and those that made themselves available for the Sunday.
Glen Eden bought their “travelling trophy” with them and we already had our name on it after last year.
A lot of the matches went to three which I want to mention because although the final score was 25-5 it doesn’t show how close it was at times.
They certainly enjoy the game, and the camaraderie, and we hope that we can do it all again next year.
Thanks to Shane and his crew for coming up, Dennis for doing the tables, all of those that helped with the board or the raffles, and a big thanks to Nadine and Noelene who sorted the food and Bob and Kev who nailed the BBQ.
That is all the pool for this year so enjoy the summer!!
Cheers,T H
Prizegiving News
Sunday was the (almost) end of the season with the Road to Prize-giving tournament for the top 8 qualifiers from Interclub play, and this was followed by the pool Prize-giving.
We had 8 players with the points ranging from 26 to 18 so we got them underway on a ranked knockout draw. 8 became 4 and then 4 became 2 and in the end it was the top two qualifiers who had made the final, last year’s winner Eddy Edwards, and Dave Ollason.
Best of 5 and they traded frames until in the end Dave managed to grab the fifth and the match to be this years “Road to Prize-giving” champion. Congratulations to him and thanks to all who played.
On to the Prize-giving and a fun affair it was, unfortunately we had a few winners who did not attend which is disappointing but mostly it seems because they were away.
Afterwards John made a point of thanking me for the season which I appreciate, and then Stretch thanked Dennis for his work on the tables, and the Bar staff for all they do. Hear hear I say, well done indeed to them !

Mens Singles
Hi, Sunday saw the Mens Singles and a turnout of 15, all there just before muster meant we had the draw done (2 sections) and underway just after 9. Well done all and a great way to start what could be a long day. 6 Frames each in the qualifying rounds. Around 2 we broke for a bite to eat and by around 4 we were all done.
We then ranked the top four from each section based on qualifying results to get the following semi finals.
Anthrax v Tony – Anthrax won
Kevin v Storm – Storm won
Stretch v Ash – Ash won
Zom v James – Zom won
Anthrax and Storm then played the 1st Semi with Storm advancing to the final, Ash and Zom played the other with Zom advancing to the final.
Away we go with the best of five final and it was a great match with good play on both sides. Storm took the first, Zom the next 2, then Storm got the 4th to make it 2 all.
Final frame and momentum going back and forth until finally Storm is on the black. He plays a safety but gets the dreaded double kiss which propels the white into a position where Zom can have a crack at his last ball. Zom gets that, then pots the black to take the last frame and the match.
Congratulations to Zom, to Storm for making the final and thanks to all those that participated.
RSA Invitational Pairs Report
The WW RSA INVITATIONAL PAIRS and we were very pleased to almost fill it with only 1 bye, a big improvement on previous years with great support from HBC RSA and Birkenhead RSA and plenty of local teams.
Underway about 9 and by 11 we were on to the last 16 in the main event. Through the next couple of hours we finished that and the last 16 in the plate as well as have lunch and a nice lunch it was thanks Fran.
Another round and the semi-finals were set. Cheesemakers (Ash C and Scott) set to play the Westies, HBC 2 set to play HBC 4. In the plate WW RSA 2 play BKHD 1 and the Ollies play Trojon.
Cheesemakers put up and fight but the Westies win and are set to play HBC2 in the best of 5 final.
In the plate BKHD 1 play the Ollies. It goes to the three frames and in the end Birkenhead 1 snatch it.
In the main final the Westies take a 2 nil lead but HBC 2 bounce back to make it 2 all. The fifth frame is closely fought but HBC win the race to the black but Geoff wasn't able to convert. Glen then goes to the table and knowing a clearance was the best way forward makes sure of his three last balls before potting a great black in the corner to take the frame and the match. Congrats to the winners, well done to the runners up and thanks to all that played or helped make it all happen.
Men's Pairs Report
The men's selected pairs was held on Sunday and we had 14 teams signed up to play and by 10 past 9 they were all there.
A great turnout, and great to see some new faces. 14 teams meant two sections of 7 with everyone playing 6 matches so we did the draw and got underway.
It is a lot of games to get through but we made steady progress and around 2 o'clock Mark Dellow and Storm cooked the BBQ lunch so we all had a bit of a munch before getting back in to it. Thanks Mark and Storm.
An hour or so later we finished the round robin stage and we had a clear winner and runner up in each section which meant no need for playoffs.
Winners of section 1, Dave Ollason and John Olsen played Bob Harrison and I, with Stretch Penney and John Stephen playing the runners up in section 1, Craig and Cameron Keats.
Bob and I got through as did John and Stretch and so we got started on the best of 5 final.
They had beaten us in round robin play but we took the first frame to lead 1 nil. They won the next, then us again, then them to make it 2 all.
We broke in the final frame and after a few shots each we had a bit of a lead. Bob steps up and he is playing well and before you know it he is on the last ball before the black with Stretch and John still having most of their balls on the table.
He plays a great pot sneaking the ball in past another ball but the white cannons in to one of the other balls and stops dead leaving him snookered on the black.
Easy path off the bottom cushion is partially blocked so he has to hit it a bit straighter with right hand side but doesn’t quite pull it off missing the black meaning John and Stretch win.
They had won all of their Round Robin matches so on the day they had a perfect record. No easy feat and so they deserve the win getting their names on the trophy again, a repeat of last year's result.
Congrats to them and well done to all who entered, the standard of play just keeps getting better and better
Nothing next week as the Hakaru day was cancelled but the following week is the Drawn pairs, don’t forget that is open to men and women.
Week after that (19th) is the Invitational so get your names up for that also.

Upcoming Events & Cancellation
This weekend sees the Mens Selected pairs.
Hakaru the following weekend (5 Aug) has been cancelled. They no longer have a pool table so we are not sure what will happen long term. Attempts to move it to the Mangawhai club failed and Kamo also are busy so it is now a free day.
After that is the Drawn pairs (remember this is open to men and women) and the week after that (19th August) is the Invitational.
The sheets for all of these are up so please get your names down.

Birkenhead Visit
Birkenhead came to visit on Sunday and it was great to see our old friends as always.
They were excited too as they had a 2 game lead from our previous encounter earlier in the year.
We ended up with 14 singles and the result could not have been more even at 7 all.
Stoppage time for afternoon tea, Savans as usual providing fantastic fare.
Then on to the pairs and the first three all went our way to give us a good chance of grabbing victory, then they made it 3-1, then we made it 4-1 looking good, but then they made it 4-2 so it was all riding on the last match.
Tommo and Seth did their best but in the end Paula and Slim were too strong and Birkenhead pinched it, we actually won the day 11-10 but they get to take the silverware home with a home and away total of 23 versus our total of 22.
Ladies Pairs
Sunday 15th was the ladies pairs and a good field of 6 turned up at 11 with a mix of new teams and tried and true.
A 5 x round robin draw was drawn up and about 11.15 we were into it. The standard of play was good and the competition was serious with many of the matches going to three frames. As the day progressed two teams were dominating and in the end it was them who took the honours, with runners up Tammy and Tracey winning 4 of their 5 matches, losing only to the winners, Kay and Emma (Ward) who won a very impressive 5 out of 5 matches to take the Trophy.
Lunch was delicious thanks to them all bringing a plate and the laughter and refreshments flowed with good spirits all round albeit some having perhaps a little too much !
Upcoming Pool Events
This coming Sunday is the Ladies Pairs 11.00 muster.
The following Sunday is Birkenhead at home 12.00 muster.
The week after that (29 Jul) is the Men’s Selected pairs.
We also handed out invitations to, and have had a lot of interest in, the Invitational Pairs coming up on the 19th August so we forward to another great day then.

Sheets for all of these are up at the club so please get your entries in.
Colin Whalen
Sunday saw the 43rd running of the Colin Whalen Memorial Pairs and we were very pleased to have Colin’s son Drew in attendance from Wellington. At 8.45 we had most of the 32 teams registered so we got started.
The calibre of team seems to get stronger every year which is great, but it also makes getting through the first round harder! This showed as many of the local chances lost their first round matches and went into the plate.
Well done to Rams 4, RSA 3, RSA 4, C & C and Restricted who made it through. Of those the first 3 all lost their next round and in that half of the draw the Semi-final ended up being SHAY ED (Ed and Shay) v Hibiscus 3 (Moloi and Tina) In the bottom half of the draw C & C won again to reach the last 8 before being beaten by Westies (Glen and Dennis) and Restricted also made the last 8 before they got beaten by Hibiscus 4 (Svend and Geoff)In the end it was Hibiscus 3 and Westies who squared off in the Final, with Westies taking it out to win the trophy once more. In the Plate K & K, RSA 1, Kaipara Sports, RSA 2 and Rams 1 all progressed to the last 8 and after that round the semis were K & K (Kerry and Keith) v Kaipara (President John and Stretch) and RSA 2 (Bob and me) v Birkenhead 2 (Young and Peter). A local derby in the plate final as Kaipara played RSA 2. In the end RSA 2 took it out to win the Plate, Well done to all those that played, the office for all of the prep work they do, the bar staff and caterers, and Dennis who does a great job of the tables for us.

Onehunga Report
Hi Sunday saw the return match against Onehunga at Onehunga.
A number of regulars couldn’t make so a big thanks to those 9 who turned out to take them on.
Onehunga had made some rule changes which may have put some players off but it’s the same for everyone and Onehunga team started stronger taking the lead 10-4 after the singles.
We had beaten them by 3 points in the home match but they now had a 3 point lead in the series so we needed to win the doubles well to retain the trophy.
It wasn’t to be though with Onehunga taking out the pairs 5-3 to make is 15-7 overall, a convincing win and the trophy will get to spend the off season in their hands.
Snooker Club Champs & Colin Whalen
This weekend is the Snooker Club Champs with yours truly the defending champion.
10.00am SHARP muster please as there will be plenty to get through.
Names on the notice at the club please.
Colin Whalen Memorial is coming up on the 8th of July, 8.30 sharp muster.
Entry forms behind the bar or register your team at office@warkworthrsa.co.nz
$50 payment can be made at the RSA or to 01-0482-0009613-00 (please register first and include your team name in your payment details).
Sunday saw a visit from Kamo Club.
Ken and his band of merry men and women, arrived a little after 11 and once they got settled we were into it, with 12 against 12 in the singles.
Home table advantage saw us win this convincingly but the score didn’t do justice to Kamo with many of the games a lot closer than the 10-2 score line suggested.
We had all worked up an appetite by now and lunch was served, and promptly devoured, with everyone commenting on how yummy it all was. Thanks Savans !
Pairs now and they went the same way as the singles with a 5-1 score-line in our favour. Kamo were keen for more so we played 5 more games of which they won 2 out of the 5, a better reflection on how competitive they were. Final Score 18-5
We don’t have a return match scheduled yet but we are looking at it and I look forward to taking them on in their home club.
